Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is obtained from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant with a long history in Indian and Chinese tradition. It reached skincare only in the last decade, for one reason: in caring for the look of fine lines and evenness, it behaves much like retinoids, while sharing nothing with them chemically. It is not a vitamin A derivative, and it does not share the way retinoids irritate.

That is the point of it. With retinol the obstacle is usually not how it works but how it is tolerated: the first weeks often bring tightness, flaking and sun sensitivity, and a good share of people abandon it before anything could show. Bakuchiol usually skips that phase. It needs no gradual introduction, it does not quarrel with other ingredients, and it can be used in the morning.

In a formula it is oil-soluble and holds up better than pure retinol, which is sensitive to both light and air. So it belongs in a rich oil or balm phase, surrounded by antioxidants — in our case a vitamin C ester, natural vitamin E and gamma oryzanol — where it stays stable for as long as the product is in use.

We use bakuchiol in the No4. Midnight Mineral Pressed Serum. We chose it deliberately over sharper actives, and not because a sharper product is beyond us. The reasoning is simple: the outcome of care depends more on persistence than on the strength of any single product. A sharper product lasts a shorter time in the bathroom than on the shelf, and care abandoned after a month does nothing at all.

In practice, bakuchiol does not reward waiting for a miracle in a fortnight. Three months of daily use is a sensible horizon, and the most reliable way to learn whether it does anything is to add nothing else during that time. Anyone who introduces acids, a new cream and a different cleanser at once learns nothing about any of them. Bakuchiol also needs no pauses or cycling — its advantage is precisely that it can be done the same way every day.
