Three letters that appeared within a few years on cosmetic labels, in supplements and in headlines about longevity. NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide — a molecule the body uses as a precursor to the coenzyme NAD+.
NAD+ is present in every cell and takes part in energy metabolism and repair. Its level falls with age. That much is textbook biochemistry and nobody disputes it.
Where NMN came from
Attention to NMN came from ageing research, not from cosmetics. The great majority of published work concerns oral administration, laboratory models and animal studies. That distinction usually disappears in marketing copy, and it matters: swallowing a molecule and applying it to skin are two different questions with two different answers.

Whether an ingredient does anything on skin is not decided by the ingredient alone. Molecule size, concentration, the formula around it, pH, how long it stays on the skin and whether it reaches where it should all decide. For topically applied NMN there is still little public data. The studies that exist tend to be short, on small numbers of people, and often come from the companies that make the raw material — which does not make them wrong, but does mean they cannot carry the weight of independent evidence.
So why do we use it
NMN sits in No2. Bioactive Toner as part of a composition — alongside fermented ingredients, hydrosols and glycerin. We judge the toner by what is apparent at once and what a customer can verify herself: skin is moisturised, refreshed, more comfortable to the touch and ready for the next step. That claim rests on the whole formula, not on one ingredient inside it.
We are also interested in what is still being learned about NMN. That is why it is in the composition, and why we write about it this way rather than as a miracle.
Finding NMN on a label
In an INCI list it appears as Nicotinamide Mononucleotide. Do not confuse it with Niacinamide, a different and far better studied ingredient. Order in the list tells you something about quantity: ingredients are listed in descending order down to one per cent, below which the order says nothing.
- Nicotinamide Mononucleotide — NMN, a precursor to NAD+
- Niacinamide — vitamin B3, a different ingredient with different data
- Nicotinamide Riboside — another precursor, again a different molecule
If you want to read further, look for review papers on NAD+ and skin. On topical NMN there are not many yet — which is itself the answer to how strong a claim it can carry today.
