Skin care

Caring for mature skin after forty

Skin after forty does not need different care because it has aged. It needs it because its balance has shifted — it holds water less well, renews more slowly and takes offence more quickly. Three different problems, three different answers.

Applying care at the mirror.

Mature skin gets talked about as though it were a single diagnosis. In fact several things shift after forty, and each shows up differently. Before reaching for new products, it pays to know which of them is actually causing trouble.

What changes over time

Skin holds water less well, renews more slowly and its barrier tolerates less. For many women a hormonal shift arrives on top of that, and skin registers it before anywhere else does. The result is awkwardly contradictory: skin becomes drier and more sensitive at the same time, so it responds worse to stronger care than it used to.

This matters, because it leads to uncomfortable advice. At the moment you would most like to push harder, the right answer is usually gentler, not sharper.

Dry is not the same as dehydrated

Dry skin lacks oil — usually a permanent type, recognisable by roughness and tightness hours after washing. Dehydrated skin lacks water; that is a passing state, and it can appear on skin that otherwise shines.

After forty the two often meet, which is why a richer cream alone does not solve it. Water needs something to bind it, and oil needs something to keep it in. Those are two layers, not one product.

Four steps that make sense

  • Cleansing that does not strip. If skin feels tight after washing, the problem starts here and no serum above it will fix that.
  • Toning as the first layer of water. Damp skin takes the care that follows better than dry skin does.
  • Hydration with ingredients that bind water. Hyaluronic acid in several molecular sizes, and peptides.
  • Nourishment that seals the water in. An oil or balm layer at the end; richer at night than in the morning.

Going from thinnest to richest is not an aesthetic whim. The reverse order means the hydration never reaches the skin, because the oil applied first is in its way.

What to watch out for

Aggressive exfoliation is the most common mistake after forty. Skin looks briefly smoother, then the weakened barrier answers a week later with sensitivity, redness and, paradoxically, a worse appearance. Gentle acids in a rinse-off product are a different league from strong leave-on peels.

The second trap is switching. If the routine changes every month, skin never gets the chance to show what suits it. Three months with the same care say more than a year of trying things.

Where to begin

The cheapest start is to buy nothing and spend a month doing what you already own, in the right order, morning and night. Only when that is not enough does changing the formulas make sense — and even then, one step at a time.

If you want to try the whole ritual, the travel set is the sensible way in: all four steps in small sizes, so you learn whether the whole suits you rather than one product taken out of it.
